I very recently bred my Silken Windhound girl Hoppsan. She is 6 years old now, and this will be her last litter. She only had one before actually, with 2 wonderful little daughters as a result.
Even though dogs are much quicker about it than us, you only have to wait 9 weeks instead of 9 months, it still seem to take forever to find out if the dog is pregnant or not.
What you can do to make sure, is to make an ultra sound after about a month, or wait until the end of the pregnancy and take X-rays, when pups are big enough to have calcified bones that will show up on X-rays at all.
The ultrasound will show live pups, with heart beats and all, the X-rays will not tell you if the puppy is still alive. So that is always a worry, you may know approx how many puppies to expect, but are they all alive?
I just found this page with baby heart beat monitors, apperently they are meant to listen to the baby heart beats before it is born. If it works with babies, why not with puppies?
I think I am going to get myself one of those, wouldn’t it be cool to listen to puppy heart beats at home, before they are born? Oh, I can’t wait to have it delivered!!
